We all have something from our past that makes us question ourselves at times, even after knowing how far we have come. It makes us feel bad about the decisions we have made in our lives.
You lose your self-esteem. You are afraid to take a first step that can help you let it go because you are afraid and don’t want to feel that pain again.
But trust me, you are not alone. As human beings, it’s our basic nature to attach ourselves to materialistic things, a person, or even our own past. And the more we spend time thinking about it, the more it will make us worry- in the present and about our future.

But let me tell you the truth- you can let go of your past and live a happier life.
I know how it feels. Three years ago, I was in the same situation and attached myself to an outcome I knew I couldn’t change. It used to make me feel anxious. I had countless sleepless nights because I failed at something when everyone around me thought I would make it.
It’s important to know what you can do today, so that your past (no matter how bad it seems), doesn’t haunt you in the present or future.
Step 1: Prioritize.
What is the most important thing in your life? Do you have something you have wanted to do since you were a child? Trying to forget your past is a temporary escape, but it won’t let you be free in the long run.
Have you heard the phrase, “Wherever your attention goes, energy flows.”? It works in this situation, too. Imagine putting all of your efforts into something more important than your passed failures. Because the truth is you can’t always make the right decisions.
What matters most is how you overcome after making a mistake. It’s like replacing your old version with your new one that is better and stronger.

Step 2: If you can’t change it, stop wasting time on it.
I know it’s easier said than done. It’s so annoying to replay your mistakes over and over again in your head. But the past is the past. It’s gone now, and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Most importantly, you can’t change it.
But you can learn from it so you can avoid making the same mistake again.
Step 3: Start journaling.
Journaling is a powerful and easy way to release negative thoughts from your chest. By doing so, you will also understand your thoughts and feelings more clearly.
If you are just starting out, check out a few tips I have on how to start journaling. This guide will teach you how to start journaling as a beginner.
Step 4: Don’t take criticism personally.
If you do something that doesn’t make sense to others, they may start to criticize you. But someone criticizing you doesn’t always mean you are wrong.
You can always pause to analyze if your actions align with your best version of yourself and if the answer is yes, then ignore the criticisms.
The Takeaway
Remember, the past is the past and cannot be changed. It’s best to let it all go because there’s nothing you can do about it. Once you let go of the past, you will live a fuller and happier life.
