Do you want to start a blog? Do you think it’s tough to turn into a lucrative business? If you answered yes to both of those questions, then this article is just for you!

Put plainly, nothing worth having is easily obtained. Starting a blog business is no different. If you thought that starting a new career was going to be hard, then you are at least starting with the right mindset. The truth is, no one likes to start over after they’ve been doing one job for a really long time, especially if they were particularly good at it.

So, what crazy person would leave an amazing money making career to start a new one that is bound to be hard, like in the case of chasing after an imaginary, writing career?

The answer is, Me!

Why Did I Start a Blog?

I love writing, always have. So when my chance finally came to start over, I leaped. No questions asked. I left the money making industry of real estate to start a freaking blog. It had zero guarantees and I was scared out of my mind! After all, everyone I knew kept telling me I was absolutely nuts to start a new career at thirty-six.

How many chances in one lifetime does someone get to start their dream job and to do it in a way that is genuinely satisfying? That’s not to say that there hasn’t been a ton of ups and downs along the way. The point is, I love what I’m doing. No day is ever the same.

There’s a catch though. To start a blog business as a newbie/parent, you have to accept the fact that you are essentially starting from scratch with no support system in place, no salary, no one to guide you, and that you will probably be interrupted by your kids a lot. You’re basically on your own, every single day, with a lot of questions about the in’s and out’s of everything.

The Blogging Truth

Blogging as a profession is not the normal nine to five job. It requires a whole lot of patience, self-love, acceptance of rejection, and business sense. These skills are basic must-haves if you hope to survive as a blogger and parent in the industry.

When first starting out, blogging is more of an expense than it is a money maker. And if you don’t know what you’re doing in the blogging world, those first few months will be filled with insanity, crushing pressure, and feelings of wanting to quit.

BUT… and this is a big but… if you make it through all of that, there are some serious financial gains and freeing realities that come from the commitment to blogging.

Seeing as so many parents want to work without sacrificing their time with the kids, it makes sense that parents blog. But why do so many people not know how to do it, successfully?

There’s plenty of information but nothing on how to create a blogging plan for a blogging business. That’s why I’m bringing you this article. Here are my 7 tips to start your blogging business successfully.

Here Are 7 Tips to Start A Blog Business:

#1 Buy your domain.

That’s right, become the owner of your blog’s .com or .net or .org and you’ll be one step closer to setting up your site for monetization.

#2 Write up a business plan.

Yep, I said it. Blogging can be as financially lucrative as you want it to be. The first step to making it so, is writing up a business plan. Sit down with yourself for however long it takes, to put a strategy into place. Ask yourself, “What’s my blog about?”, “Who am I trying to speak to with my content?”, “What’s my blogging business mission and values?”, and “What does my blog aim to accomplish with its content?”.

Yes, this sounds expensive and yes, this is serious. If you’re trying to build a blogging business, you need a business license. This will give you an EIN, tax ID for getting paid, that the state and IRS can track. You would’t want to be caught earning money without paying taxes.

#4 Get accounting software.

You’ll need to keep track of all of your income. You could be getting paid from one company or 100. How you keep up with your income is super important because it will help you determine if you’re making enough or spending too much. I use Quickbooks but you can use others as well, like Mint.

You’ll need a privacy disclaimer, an affiliate disclaimer, a disclaimer disclosure, a terms and conditions policy, a returns and refunds policy, an ADA policy, etc. There are so many policies that your site may need depending on your blogging activities, so be sure to consult with a lawyer. This could be the difference between getting sued or not.

There is a footer at the bottom of every single website you ever visit. They are all protected by copyright. Your blog should have the same protection. Sure, the minute you write something it becomes intellectual property but you want to have that added copyright in the footer.

#7 Get contracts ready.

Depending on your site and what you plan to do, you may need freelancer agreements, writing guidelines agreements, brand collabs & sponsored content agreements. These can come from a plethora of places. My two preferred methods are ASelfGuru (the blogger legal bundle is amazing and is written by an actual attorney!) or an online contract writing site like Bonsai.

The Takeaway

Wanting to start a blog business is a great idea. Just understand that it is not as easy as it looks and it is not for everyone. Can anyone do it? Yes. Will everyone be able to maintain it… that really depends on your mindset.
